Have you noticed Whitehorse feels less safe than in the past?

The numbers back it up. Growing up in the Yukon, I remember a place where parents felt safe letting their kids play outside in the neighbourhood unattended, where break-ins were rare, and where downtown Whitehorse was a thriving hub, not a crime hotspot.

Today, that sense of security is gone, and Whitehorse now holds the dubious distinction of being a crime capital of North America.

Statistics Canada and the Yukon Bureau of Statistics show Whitehorse’s violent crime rate is seven times higher than New York City’s. Our property crime rate is over four times higher than Los Angeles’. No major Canadian or U.S. city comes close to the crime wave our northern community is facing.

I’ve heard loud and clear as I knock on doors that it’s only getting worse. While factors like economic pressures and housing play a role, growing crime strains our community and demands action.

I've had enough.  As a lifelong Yukoner, I'm committed to practical solutions in the legislature: stronger policing, bail reform, prevention programs, and getting people out of the criminal pipeline. Together, we can restore safety.
